Main Ave Road Diet demonstration project was approved 4-1 by the Bismarck City Commission. The project would reconfigure the existing Main Ave (Washington-6th St) from four lanes to a three lane configuration (including a new dedicated left turn lane). The new configuration is more efficient and increases safety at intersections for pedestrians and vehicles. Parking will remain the same. The demonstration project will start early summer and be monitored for effectiveness through the fall. Downtowners will work with engineers to monitor the changes with businesses and property owners during the duration of the demonstration project. Main Ave Road Diet is part of the city’s Downtown Sub-area Study accepted in 2013. The results of the change will also be to “re-establish a pedestrian-friendly environment and stimulate considerable in-fill development and redevelopment of existing ground floor storefronts.”
